5 things you might not know about abortion

Abortion, as a woman’s legal right, was affirmed by the US Supreme Court in 1973. Abortion is a medical operation that involves the removal of the fetus or embryo from the uterus of the mother. It must be ideally performed before the fetus develops the ability to survive outside of the womb. Although in the case of late-term abortion, this rule is broken, but that is done only when the life of the mother is at risk. Here is a list of things you must know about abortion:

Abortion is common

Most of us have grown to believe that abortion is an uncommon activity. But that is just another myth that has been found to be false. About thirty percent of American women have gone through an abortion by the age of 45. This comes as a surprise to many, but you might think you don’t know anyone who has gone through abortion; this is because they might not have told you about the operation. Another myth that lower-class women get abortions is untrue, women of all races and classes get abortions.

Abortions don’t kill

The probability of someone dying from an abortion is even less than one in 1,00,000. There have been more than 1,00,000 legal abortions, and not even a single person has faced death. In comparison to this, about 15.9 women died per 1,00,000 live births. The risk of death by abortion is higher as the pregnancy gets older and it is the lowest in the first trimester of the pregnancy. It is the ideal time to get an abortion.

Everyone gets abortions

People believe that only childfree women get abortions, but some women have had babies and abortions. In most cases, the timing of the baby is not correct or suited for the family and leads to abortion of the baby. Teens get pregnant in some cases and need to get an abortion; this does not mean that they would be childfree throughout their entire life, they can conceive at a later stage in life.

Don’t use abortion as birth control

Pregnancy can be avoided with the help of condoms, or birth control pills, you must not rely on abortion to play the role of a birth control. Although this is a very uncommon practice, it is highly unlikely that women use abortion as birth control, but you should avoid it in any case. If someone wants to have unprotected sex and not get pregnant, they would need to get more than 20 abortions.

Fetuses don’t feel pain

Abortion is considered to be a cruel act, as you are causing trouble and pain to the fetus. But in most cases of abortion, the fetus does not witness any pain. The fetal perception of pain is unlikely before the third trimester, therefore, if the abortion is undertaken before that, then it is highly unlikely that the fetus will feel any pain. Only 1.4 percent of abortions happen after the 21st week of pregnancy, some of them having the mother’s life at risk.
