Lower the risk of breast cancer with these practices

A woman’s body goes through several changes during puberty, and the development of breasts is one. The breast consists of fat and connective tissues, while the tiny glands produce milk that is meant for breastfeeding. In case of breast cancer, the cells in the body multiply uncontrollably, and it is the excessive growth of cells that leads to cancer. Breast cancer is one of the most common causes of death among women.

Breast cancer treatments have advanced, however, there is also an increase in its diagnosis among women. A woman may experience several symptoms that are usually accompanied by the formation of a lump or thickened tissue in the breast or around the armpit. So are there factors that put a woman at a higher risk of developing breast cancer? Well, yes. It is wise to undertake the following preventive steps that will lower your risk of developing the disease.

Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding plays a major role in the prevention of breast cancer. Feeding your baby for longer has a good effect in preventing the disease and lowering the risk of getting affected. A woman does not menstruate during breastfeeding. This limits the number of menstrual cycles and thereby limits the exposure to estrogen. So, breastfeeding is not only beneficial to the baby but also great for moms.

Exercising

Exercising is not just essential for healthy living but also protects one from breast cancer in several ways. And this does not mean that you have to start undertaking a hardcore exercise regime. It is recorded that exercising for 150 minutes in a week can act as a protective mechanism against breast cancer. More importantly, physical exercise also helps you maintain weight, one of the main risk factors that promote breast cancer.

Limiting alcohol intake

Excess alcohol consumption can put one at a higher risk of developing not just breast cancer but also other diseases. It is recommended that one should consume less than one drink per day as even small amounts can pose a threat.

Reducing hormone therapy

Long-term hormone therapy increases a woman’s risk of breast cancer. If you take hormone therapy for a particular condition, ask your doctor if you can limit the same or manage the condition with nonhormonal therapies or medication. However, in a few cases, a complete stop can lead to complication, and you will have to continue with the dosage. Monitor the length of time that you need to take hormone therapy for and lower the dosage.

Consuming healthy food

The food you eat can affect your health in a great way. Eating the right type of healthy food decreases the risk of suffering from several medical conditions including breast cancer. High levels of carotenoids in the bloodstream lower the risk of breast cancer. Carotenoids are found in fruits and vegetables such as red peppers, carrots, tomatoes, and leafy vegetables. Moreover, reducing the consumption of red meats and processed foods is essential.
