Managing and Treating Diabetes with Insulin

Managing and Treating Diabetes with Insulin

Diabetes is a condition that is affecting a significant percentage of people, irrespective of the demography and race a person belongs to. As such, an insulin therapy becomes inevitable in certain diabetic patients. In such a case, it is important to understand the role that insulin plays in managing your blood glucose levels.

Role of insulin

The carbohydrates break down into sugar (glucose) every time you eat. The glucose enters the bloodstream. It is considered as the primary source of energy. The function of insulin is to allow glucose to enter the cells and tissues of the body. The blood glucose level is maintained by insulin, a hormone which is produced by the pancreas.

If the pancreas is unable to secrete enough insulin, the blood glucose level will increase as it will not be able to enter the cells of the body. This condition is known as diabetes. If it is left untreated, increased blood glucose levels can result in nerve damage, kidney damage, and blindness.

Objective of insulin therapy

People with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes are treated with insulin therapy. People with type 1 diabetes have to completely rely on insulin therapy. The insulin therapy replaces the insulin that the body fails to produce in type 1 diabetes patients. Insulin therapy is also recommended to type 2 diabetes patients when other medications have failed to keep their blood glucose levels in check.

If your doctor recommends insulin therapy, you must take it seriously. This therapy is effective in keeping the blood sugar levels in the desired range and in preventing further health complications.

Effective Treatment plan for Diabetes

The treatment plan for insulin therapy is as follows:

Amount and type of insulin

The amount and type of insulin are of crucial importance in an insulin therapy. Various types of insulin are available in the market that varies in how long and how quickly they can control blood sugar levels. Your doctor can tell you to combine two types of insulin for better results. Several factors will be considered by your doctor for choosing the type of insulin such as the type of diabetes you have, your blood glucose levels, your lifestyle, and intra-day fluctuations in your blood sugar levels.

Options for insulin delivery

Insulin is delivered by injections. You can choose among injection pens, syringes, or an insulin pump. In many cases, insulin needs to be injected several times a day. You must make sure of the following:

  • The area that you’re injecting and your hands are clean.
  • Choose an area with fatty tissue such as your thighs or bottom.
  • Insert the insulin needle carefully at 90-degree angle.
  • Put the insulin needle in quickly.
  • Make sure that the syringe is fully pressed down.
  • Use a new needle every time you inject insulin.

Insulin therapy requires discipline. You can manage and treat diabetes easily with insulin. Although the therapy is demanding, you can lead a normal, active life. Your doctor will choose a program that will fit your lifestyle and needs. This therapy will help you to prevent any complications related to diabetes.
